Art & Architecture

Picasso reigns this summer, 125 years since his birth. Madrid’s top museums are staging exhibitions to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the return to Spain of his painting Guernica. See Picasso, Tradition and Avant-Garde (6 June – 3 September) at the Prado, whilst another show devoted to the artist runs concurrently at Reina Sofia, home to Guernica. In his Malaga birthplace, Muses and Models (until 28 Feb 2007) at the Picasso Museum examines the role women played in his work. View the work of his friend, the Spanish-born French abstract artist Julio González (1876-1942) at Valencia’s Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Centre Julio González (until end of Sept). Enjoy the fresh air of Barcelona’s leafy Montjuïc and see Discovery of the Romanesque (1 June-17 Sept) at Museu Nacional d’art de Catalunya, view some 100 artworks collected during the early 19th century by Modernista architect Lluís Domenech I Montaner (1849-1934).

Meanwhile, Le Corbusier, or the Synthesis of the arts (1 June – 6 August) at the Musée Rath in Geneva is a treat for admirers of 20th-century architecture. Over 130 paintings, architectural models, drawings, sculptures and tapestries by the great Swiss architect, founder of the International Style, demonstrate his true renaissance spirit. Sketches by Le Corbusier are also on display at Geneva’s nearby Musee d’art et Histoire in Drawings with a Purpose (1 June – 6 August)

In Germany, Berlin-Tokyo, Tokyo-Berlin (7 June – 3 October) at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie is fairly self-explanatory. Artworks celebrate the strong connections between the two cities, starting with Japonism. Even the gallery space has been specially designed by the revered Japanese architect Tokyo Ito. The Alte Pinakothek in Munich has an exhibition devoted to the American abstract artist Cy Twombly (b.1928) until 30 July. Sports fans can pop next door for something completely different: Architecture and Sport (1 June – 3 September) at Pinakothek der Moderne called explores the arenas of antiquity right up to the slick designer modern stadiums of today – perfect for World Cup fans.
