Music & Dance
This summer has plenty to keep fans of music and dance happy, starting with Festival de Marseille (6 June – 11 July), which offers a mixture of contemporary dance and theatre, including works by William Forsythe and performances by the National Ballet of Marseille. HeimatKlänge (9 June – 9 July), an annual celebration of world sounds in Berlin, coincides with Germany’s hosting of the World Cup, and features Brazilian, Ukrainian, Romanian and Japanese music, with a special emphasis on South Africa – the hosts of the World Cup 2010. For something entirely different later in the summer, try the Young Euro Classic festival, or grab those castanets and try the Flamenco Festival (11-19 August) also in Berlin. Further south, Munich’s annual Tollwood Summer Festival (14 June – 8 July) boasts appearances from Herbie Hancock, Madness and Art Garfunkel. At the more highbrow end of the scale, opera fans can catch performances of Puccini’s La Bohème, Verdi’s La Traviata, Mozart’s Magic Flute and much more at the New Opera Festival of Rome (17 June – 14 August). Not far from Virgin Express destination Malaga, the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance (23 June – 9 July) traces its origins back to symphony performances at the Palace of Charles V in the late 19th century. Today it offers a mixture of ballet, opera, classical music, flamenco and zarzuela (musical drama). Finally, Brussels’ Eglise des Minimes will host a series of concerts every week day from 1 July to 31 August, covering a huge variety of styles from ancient Chinese music, medieval French and English music to European classical.
